A paper for hourly work. The Daily Shift is printed every morning at six o’clock for Berlin, and carries work paid by the hour or by the shift — café and kitchen, waiting, event, driving, cleaning. A free Late Edition follows all day, from six in the morning until ten at night, for shifts that must be filled the same day. Copy for the morning paper closes at four in the afternoon.
Job seekers are never charged. Not for reading the paper, not for replying to a Box, not for two lines of their own in Situations Wanted. There is nothing to join and nothing to buy. Advertisers place their notices free for now, on page 22; readers pay nothing, ever.
No advertiser may ask you for money. Not a fee, a deposit, a uniform, training, a test, a visa or a “registration”. An honest employer pays you; you do not pay them. Report any advertiser who asks with the coupon on page 23, and the Box is taken out of the paper.
Advertisements are the advertiser’s word, not ours. Copy is set as it is handed in. We do not visit the premises, inspect a licence or verify a rate of pay, and nothing printed here is a recommendation. Read an advertisement as you would read one on a shop window: with your own eyes open. Meet in a public place; do not hand over a passport or an original document to anyone.
A reply to a Box. We keep the name you sign, the note you write, and your telephone number. The number is shown to the advertiser only if you tick the box that shares it — otherwise it stays with us and the advertiser sees the note alone. A reply sits in that Box’s inbox for the advertiser to read; no reply is ever sold, and none is shown to another reader.
An advertisement. Vacancies and Situations Wanted are printed as handed in, together with the Box number issued to them. An advertisement leaves the paper when its insertions run out, or the moment the advertiser marks the place filled — whichever comes first. A Stop Press notice stands only for the day it is called in.
The key to a Box. The inbox link handed to an advertiser or a job seeker is the whole of their credential: there is no password, and we ask for no account. Keep the link; anyone holding it can read that Box. Lose it, and hand in the advertisement again.
To withdraw something. Open the inbox link and mark the place filled — the advertisement leaves the next printing. If the link is gone, write to the Enquiry Desk with the Box number and what was in the copy, and it will be pulled by hand.
